What We Own, Owns Us: A Leadership Retreat That Changed Me

Reflections from Kokol Hill | 1st & 2nd August 2025

Sometimes the most important thing a leader can do is step away from the noise.

Not to escape the work, but to hear what the heart has been whispering all along.

This past week I had the privilege of journeying with our SM Health Care leadership team up to Kasih Sayang, Kokol Hill. Surrounded by clouds, cool air, and stillness, we paused. We made space to see each other, and maybe, to see ourselves more clearly.

SM Leadership Retreat 2025

We began simply by spreading peace to one another.

And then came something beautiful. We practiced “Good Gossip”, affirming one another behind each other’s backs. I watched how words can heal, how being truly seen can soften even the most guarded hearts. Many were moved to tears. I know I was.

Good Gossip

In those moments I was reminded again — we lead people, not just tasks.

Alvin led us through a session that helped us each uncover our core strength.

For me it was a moment of clarity. I’ve always had a hunger to learn and grow, especially in new technologies. Even as a child I was curious — not just about how things work, but how they can be made better. That desire has stayed with me, shaped me. And now I see how it can serve others in my role as Group General Manager.

I want to use that strength to help our team work smarter, not harder. To explore how we can automate, embrace AI, and create clear, life-giving processes. Not just to perform better, but to reduce stress, protect well-being, and unlock potential.

But beyond all that something deeper stirred in me.

As I reflected on the future I was drawn back to something eternal.

A verse from Matthew 6 whispered into my heart:

“Store your treasures in heaven, not on earth.” (Matthew 6:19–34)

In the marketplace I believe that treasures in heaven look like justice, dignity, opportunity, and provision. Not just for some, but for everyone. It’s not just about success. It’s about significance.

And this truth hit me deeply

Money changes the heart more than the heart changes money

What we own shapes us

So I’m learning to ask

What do I want to own, and what do I want to be owned by

This retreat wasn’t just about leadership. It was about being human.

It reminded me that the most meaningful work we do isn’t in systems or strategies. It’s in how we love, how we listen, and how we lead from the inside out.

I left Kokol Hill different. Softer. Clearer. And even more committed.

To lead with heart. To serve with joy.

To rise together.

Last shot! ❤️💕
